Summer Shade Solutions
Summer Shade Solutions

Spring is here and as clichéd as it sounds, it feels like summer is just around the corner.

To make the most of our large backyard, I’ve been looking into creating a second seating area, to sit, read, entertain and relax. I’ve been researching a variety of shade options and have found the possibilities really are endless. The right solution depends on a number of factors. Is this a permanent solution that you are looking to invest into? Or are you in a rental and need something you can take with you when you’re ready to move? Consider the orientation of your space to the sun, the direction of prevailing winds, the size of the area and of course, your budget.

Exterior Blinds

Offer UV protection, insulation and glare reduction. The important factor to consider is a fabric that will withstand the elements that it will be exposed to.

Awnings

Fold away easily, and depending on your budget, can be operated via the click of a button. Awnings can be installed with a motorized system connected to a solar panel.  They can be fitted with rain and wind sensors and integrated lighting and heating functions.

Shade Sails

Can be bought in pre-made sizes or custom made to suit your space. Often two to three smaller sails hung at opposing angles can be an effective way of creating shape and interest to the design of an outdoor space. If your not wanting the sails up permanently, you can invest in systems to erect and retract shades via a pulley.

Umbrellas

And of course if you’re on a budget, a bright umbrella can do wonders for an outdoor space. I’m in love with the range of Basil Bangs Umbrellas at www.basilbangs.com and the Missoni for Target Umbrellas are also very cool (No pun intended).
