The Great Australian Dream - Ep 1

As many of you may have heard, we recently sold our first home. We bought this property when we were 21 and poured our heart into making it a home. Kyal and I both find it so satisfying transforming spaces, and definitely feel a sense of accomplishment when we can sit back and look at what we've achieved. What a privilege to be standing alongside some of Australia's leading property experts in 'The Great Australian Dream' - a new online property series bought to you by RAMS. Whether you're renovating to sell, or creating your forever home, here are some tips to consider when completing your own renovations.

Think Outside the Box

If you're restricted by land size, think creatively for ways to increase your floor plan. Consider lifting the pitch of the ceiling to create additional space upstairs or an attic. Creating an outdoor room or alfresco dining area is another great way to add functional space to your home.

Let It Flow

Facilitate a seamless flow throughout your home by carrying themes from one room to another. By using the same colour palette or finishes, you will link rooms together and create continuity. It's not to say that every room needs to look the same, however if your using timber as a feature, for example, make sure that its the same timber species and profile in each room.

Keep it Simple Vs Making a Statement

Renovating a property can be an expensive exercise, so it is important to save where you can and spend where needed for maximum impact. This applies whether you're renovating to sell or renovating your forever home. Think about where you would like to create a statement. In our first home, we kept the kitchen cabinetry simple and white, and made a statement with a marble penny round splashback and copper tapware and light fittings.

Recycle

Look for opportunities to recycle old materials. Using pre-loved materials such as timber and stone is a great way to add character to your home and link the old with the new. It can also be a great way to save you money.
